i'm not a fan of communism, but i really do like this quote. i share the same sentiment with marx in regards to religion.
i think that organized religion has traditionally been used as a method of population control. meaning, religion has been used by the powerful as an excuse of the power they wield over the less powerful. religion, of itself, is not evil. religion abused, trotted out like the end-all, be-all rationale for who and what we are, is a perversion.
furthermore, there is a definite distinction between spirituality and religion. religion is a collection of ideas and beliefs and their accompanying actions, whilst spirituality is a connection with a force or deity. one does not need religion to be spiritual, and one sure as hell doesn't need spirituality to be religious (see: crusades).
what really bothers me about religion is that people tend to hold religion as a bar of competence or acceptance. what i mean by that statement is this: religion can be viewed as a clash of the haves versus the have-nots. there are places in this world that you can be killed without consideration based on your religious preference.
ideally, if you choose to accept the realm of the spirit, i think that connection must be universal. the hypocrisy of the religious rules and elite make it difficult to see through.
